Description: Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal. It depicts the Prince of Wales visiting the Durga Kund Mandir or the Monkey Temple in Varanisi India. It is dedicated to Maa Durga. Constructed in the in the 18th century by a queen of Bengal, the temple has a kund or a small rectangular water reservoir which was connected to the Ganges earlier. Like most temples in the city, this temple too has a story related to it, and it is said that the idol of the goddess appeared here on its own and was not created by any individual. It also finds its mention in the Devi Bhagavata Puran, a holy book of the Hindus. It is said that Goddess Durga has protected the holy city of Varanasi for many centuries. The structure is built in Nagara Style or a North Indian temple architecture style. Painted red and ochre, the temple has a multi-tiered spire. Monkey temple is a name that’s given to it because of the presence of a large number of monkeys here. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills most of it, measuring about 9 x 13 inches, with a caption below it. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
