It was the 19th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on March 15th, 2004. George Harrison was being inducted as a solo artist. Prince himself was being inducted on that very night, but the event producer asked Prince if he would be willing to provide the 2nd half guitar solo on a collaboration Harrison song with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and others. This invitation was against the wishes of George Harrison’s widow who only wanted artists who knew George to perform in his tribute. Prince did not personally know George Harrison but the producer invited him anyway. Prince agreed for two reasons. First, he liked Tom Petty and always wanted to play with him. Second, the previous year Rolling Stone published a rare list of the top 100 guitarist and Prince was pissed that he was not included. At rehearsal the day before, Jeff Lynne’s guitarist misunderstood that he was doing the first half solo and Prince was doing the second half solo. Although the producer straightened this out afterwards, Prince never played in rehearsals. Since Prince was also being inducted, schedules did not afford the opportunity to have a second rehearsal. As you can see in the video, Tom Petty, et al were just as surprised as everyone else with Prince’s guitar chops! It should be noted that Prince was included in the top 20, sometimes top 10, of nearly every all-time guitar or music magazine guitarist ranking thereafter, including Rolling Stone Magazine. Guitar Back Story: Prince’s prized telecaster is not a telecaster at all, but a Japanese knock off produced under the name H.S. Anderson and Hohner (the latter the well known harmonica company.) The model was the Madcat, named for the cheetah print pick guard. Of course, this guitar is long out of production. It was not a cheap knock off as it sold for around $700 in the 70s, but Prince picked up his used from a guitar shop for less than $100. Surely his guitar tech spiced it up to Prince’s specs. This Guitar Stand Tribute features a beautiful rendition of that special guitar, an engraved plate on an artist’s framed print capturing the moment of that special solo and a red hat just like Prince wore on stage that night with a commemorative Prince hat pin.
