Description: Winner receives an important unsigned oil on canvas painting from the Prior-Hamblin School circa 1852. The painting depicts the portrait of a sea captain and on the verso of the canvas, there is a faded red ink or paint sketch of a man in a shirt, trousers, and floppy hat, with a pipe clenched in his teeth and his arms in the air with an inscription reading "My dad was one...." and B.W. Davison 1852. The sketch can be seen magnified in picture 10. The painting is housed with the original frame and stretchers. The piece comes with impeccable provenance from Sotheby's New York, Important Americana sale on January 15, 2004. It was lot 290 in the sale with an estimate of $6,000-$8,000, with a realized price of $7,200 plus premium. The painting is in excellent condition, but with some condition issues. There are a few minor stretcher dents. There is consistent age related craquelure throughout, with some minor paint lifting and separation. There are small tiny scattered losses. There are three old repairs on the verso, seen in picture 11, along with scattered areas of in-painting. The original frame is solid with minor nicks, scrapes, and chips visible with some spots being touched up. Along the bottom edge of the frame there are larger losses, mostly hidden when viewing the painting from straight on. An example of the damage along the bottom edge can be seen magnified in picture 8. The painting can be hanged as is, or the new owner may wish to restore the frame's lower edge. The frame measures roughly 27.75" x 32.75", with the image measuring roughly 24" x 29". Below is some information about William Matthew Prior and the Prior-Hamblin School. Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have prior to bidding or making an offer. Thank you for checking out our listing. The son of Captain William, a shipmaster, and Sarah Bryant Prior, William Matthew Prior was born in Bath, Maine on May 16, 1806. Prior completed his first portrait in 1823, at the age of 17 after training under Charles Codman, another Maine-based painter. In 1840, Prior moved to East Boston, Massachusetts from his native Bath with his in-laws, notably fellow painter Sturtevant J. Hamblin, to invigorate his career as an artist. The paintings of Prior and Hamblin, when unsigned, are so similar in style as to be indistinguishable, and are commonly attributed to the "Prior/Hamblin School”. According to the 1852 directory of Boston, Prior lived at 36 Trenton Street in East Boston. He was a follower of the preacher William Miller, who prophesied that the end of the world was imminent. Prior wrote two books about Miller's teachings, The King's Vesture (1862) and The Empyrean Canopy (1868). Prior died on January 21, 1873 and was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Massachusetts. About 1,500 portraits are attributed to Prior. His works are in many museums and institutions around the United States including the Harvard Art Museums, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Gallery of Art. Prior is the subject of an exhibition, Artist and Visionary: William Matthew Prior Revealed, shown at the Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, New York (May 26 – December 31, 2012) and subsequently at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City (January 24 – May 26, 2013).
