Description: Offering in VERY GOOD CONDITION..."PROPAGANDA BOOM" by A. J. MACKENZIE - 1940 bookRARE, VERY HARD TO FIND 84 YEAR OLD HARDCOVER BOOKSTATED FIRST EDITION, SECOND PRINTING EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND WITH THE DUSTCOVER Alexander Johnston Mackenzie (1912 - April 7, 1945) was a Scottish barrister, soldier, and author. Just before the start of the Second World War, Mackenzie made a brilliant study of propaganda in totalitarian states ...this book "Propaganda Boom". In this work he studies in particular the propaganda of the First World War, the contemporary German Ministry of Propaganda and the Italian Ministry of Popular Culture and the Soviet Union, and the concerns of other countries about excessive government interference in news and culture. He warned that there was fakery in films, both in the entertainment industry and in newsreels and seemingly factual films. However, he also concluded that propaganda would be "the fourth defense service in any future war".Mackenzie identifies seven requirements for successful propaganda: repetition, colour, kernel of truth, slogans, specific objective, concealed motive, and timing. In July 1940, Mackenzie was commissioned into the Gordon Highlanders and became Deputy Assistant of Public Relations to the British 21st Army Group. He was killed at Rheine, Westphalia, in the final weeks of fighting in the European theatre of the war, at which time he was an acting major.Propaganda and government interference in news and culture is bigger than ever in 2024 but these days where one can manipulate the truth and publish a lie or unsubstantiated rumor on the internet and watch it go viral in a nanosecond and influence millions, we call it "fake news". This fascinating book was originally published in London just before the start of World War 2 when the Third Reich and its "spectre of doom" were about to become a very real threat to one's way of life. This is a must read and a must have reference book for the library of anyone interested in current affairs, government and the media, public relations, publicity, advertising or the internet, as the phrase "those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" couldn't be more relevant today. I purchased this wonderful book from an antiquarian bookstore in Los Angeles while a college student in the 1970's. I've treasured it for almost fifty years now but it's been slotted away on a bookshelf in my home untouched for many years and it's time to pass it on to someone else to enjoy. The dustcover has some wear as shown but is housed in an archival polypropylene Brodart protective sleeve. The price has been clipped in one of its' inside corners. The pages have some tanning consistent with an 85 year old book but all in all it is in very nice shape for its age. Has been carefully stored in a smoke-free and pet-free environment since I acquired it over forty-five years ago. See pictures. What you see is what you get. PRICED TO SELL.
