Description: PROTECT TRANS KIDS embroidered patch has text in the colors of the Transgender Pride flag bold against a black twill background, approximately 4" x 3" (100mm x 80mm). It has an 'iron-on backing', but stitching is recommended. PROTECT TRANS KIDS In many states across the nation, children who identify as transgender are under assault by the far-right wing. Laws have been proposed and, in many places enacted, that bar trans children from: A ) playing on sport teams with their friends, denying them the camaraderie and personal growth team sports offer, B ) having their pronouns and chosen names respected at school even by teachers and administrators willing to honor those identifiers, C ) changing the gender marker on their driver’s license or state-issued identification card to match their gender presentation, making them even more vulnerable to attack by transphobic bullies and thugs, and D ) receiving any form of gender-affirming treatment from any medical professional or therapist, despite the mountain of evidence proving that appropriate treatment improves quality of life for these children, and greatly reduces the risk of self-harm and suicide. It should be noted that those treatments do no more than preserve the child’s option to make a decision about their gender presentation when they reach maturity. No one is performing so-called ‘sex-change operations’ on adolescents, or force-feeding hormones to unwitting teens. No one is being brainwashed into believing they are a gender other than the one they believe themselves to be. In order to receive the treatments we’re talking about, the child must present certain clearly-identifiable traits. No law-abiding physician or therapist would commence treatment without determining that these traits are present. To do so would mean loss of licensure, lawsuits, possibly even criminal charges. It just doesn’t happen, and the records bear that out. But certain politicians have repeatedly lied about this – creating an ‘issue’ where none exists – because they know it’s good politics. Every demagogue’s playbook tells us that to score political points we must target and vilify an unpopular minority, and use our base’s fear of that minority to gin up support (and donations) for our side. Adolf Hitler used it to great effect in 1930s Germany. Joe McCarthy used it in the 1950s, when all of America was terrified of what the Communists might do. The Ku Klux Klan uses it to boost recruitment to their klaverns, targeting people of color, immigrants, Jews, Catholics, and the LGBTQ+ community. Now groups like the 'Proud Boys', the so-called 'Patriot Front' and the majority of the Republican Party (judging by their actions) have all followed suit. I abhor bullying. I particularly abhor the bullying of children, and I most particularly abhor the bullying of children by political ‘leaders’ who want to harm these children for their own political ends. If you've scanned my Facebook page you know this about me, and if you don’t it’s only because you weren’t paying attention. God knows I’ve said it often enough! So, why these patches? Simple. I went looking for an embroidered patch that said PROTECT TRANS KIDS and found a few, but none were as simple and direct as I wanted, so I designed my own, found a manufacturer, and had them whip me up a batch. They are approximately 4" x 3” (100mm x 80mm) with lettering in the colors of the Trans Pride flag, boldly standing out against a black twill background. They even have an 'iron-on backing', although I recommend stitching them on, just to be safe. I'm not trying to get rich, believe me. I'm just trying to spread an increasingly urgent message that these vulnerable children need our support and protection. I hope you'll help. BTW, another way you can help, if you've a mind to, is by supporting The Trevor Project. I do, with proceeds from my sales at eBay and Etsy. The Trevor Project works to reduce the incidence of self-harm and suicide amongst LGBTQ+ kids. Across the board, suicide is the second leading cause of death for all people aged 10 to 34. However, youth who identify as gay or lesbian are 3.5 times more likely to take their own lives than straight kids, and those who identify as trans? They are 5.87 times more likely to commit suicide than their cisgender heterosexual peers. 5.87 times more likely to harm themselves. That's messed up, and I feel safe in saying a large part of that disparity is down to the way trans kids are treated in our society: the bullying, the shaming, the anti-trans laws I mentioned above.... they all play a part. Please do what you can. Thank you. Bill James
