Description: This is the RARE Second Printing of PUBLIC CHARACTERS OF 1800-1801. To Be Continued Annually and Printed For Richard Phillips in London in 1807 in a thick octavo measuring 5.5" x 9" containing a folding engraved frontispiece first published in 1800 by Phillips that depicts the portraits of 24 out of 40 of the "Characters" found within and facing a title page which is followed by 588 pages of text, the last page having a list identifying all 24 personalities whose likeness is depicted in the frontispiece. It is bound in the original publisher's blue-gray boards re-backed in nearly matching paper with a new paper title label printed in black mounted on the spine. All 3 edges of the book are untrimmed, and many pages within are unopened, making the book virtually unread. Laid in are 2 pages in pencil composed by a previous owner that list the names of ALL 40 personages found within (Thank Goodness!: This volume was published without an Index!) Without that list I might not have made the significant discovery of a 24-page biography of Vice President Thomas Jefferson (who became POTUS from 1801-1809) starting on p. 200! It in turn is followed by a 6-page biography of Bushrod Washington. Needless to say, for we Americans these are a significant addition to what most might presume is an annual publication devoted strictly to British personalities, male & female. This might explain why the only copy of this edition located by Worldcat is housed at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA, which historically has focused mostly on Americana and American Imprints.
