Description: As described by Chris Moser in his book “Basketry of Southern California” 1993:p. 48, example 32 (See photos 7 and 8 of book and entry). Book is not included but can easily be found on line. Shallow bowl attributed to Chumash by Chris Moser, Justin Farmer and others. Split sumac and black dyed juncus on a grass foundation and coils right. Purchased by B.A. Whalen, a turn-of-the-century Los Angeles dealer, at the San Buenaventura Mission in about 1904. He soon sold it to G.A. Steiner of Pittsburgh where it remained until the mid-1980’s. Pictoral design seems to depict a procession of 7 figures, led by a person (priest?) holding a cross. They appear to be riding abbreviated horses. Four figures hold torches and below the rim there are 6 bells and a horizontal U motif. The rim is plain with an abrupt terminal end with 10 backstitches. Late 19th or early 20th Century. Diam. 42.5 cm, Hy 121cm. Purchased from Justin Farmer, #1157. This is an extremely rare basket in that it is published with great provenance and of historical importance.
