Description: This circa-1957 British import mono album from The Record Society (RS 1) features Henry Purcell's "Songs and Incidental Music to the Play" The Indian Queen by Sir Robert Howard and John Dryden. Featured performers include Patricia Clark (soprano), Sylvia Rowlands (mezzo-soprano), Duncan Robertson (tenor), Frederick Wescott (bass), Cynthia Glover (soprano), Bernard Baboulene (tenor), Richard Standen (baritone) and John Whitworth (counter-tenor), accompanied by The London Chamber Singers and The London Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Bernard. Featured leads and soloists include Lionel Bentley (1st violin), John Shinebourne (solo cello), Michael Dobson (solo oboe) and George Malcolm (harpsichord). Album notes are in English, and include a 4-page booklet discussing the play. The exact year of release is not known, but the recording appears to be from the same production and performance also released on other albums in 1957. The catalog number of RS 1 suggests that this was the first issue of The Record Society series. The album and inner sleeve is an unusual design, in which the album's spine (with embossed title and catalog number) is actually a black painted 1/4" wooden dowel that is bonded to the inner sleeve (of plastic-lined paper) and pulls out with the record. The outer sleeve has two small taped split repairs to the side opening at the upper and lower corners, and also shows a small collection index sticker in the upper right corner of the back. (Photo 2) This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years, played only on premium equipment, and show little to no wear. NOTES:Album sleeves may have a small index sticker, usually in the upper right corner of the back, which was applied when the album was first purchased for this private collection. Please be sure you know the Shipping charge to your address before bidding.
