The embossed watermark will NOT appear over the artwork on the front panel. The counter-stamps identifying this as a reproduction WILL appear discretely on the flaps only. About Jackets: The dustjacket offered in this auction is digitally scanned from a high quality original. The master is then carefully restored to remove any minor imperfections. This significantly enhances the eye appeal rather than just offering a color photocopy with flaws. Great care is taken to painstakingly retouch these images with emphasis on maintaining the full scope of the original artwork and preserving the texture and granularity of the original. The dustjacket is then printed on an industrial quality machine which far exceeds the image quality possible on any inkjet printer, and produces sharper, crisper images and much better color definition (tone, hue & saturation) with pleasing results. The author takes the reader into his confidence, as it were, and instead of concealing the criminal, begins by showing the latter actually at work. The reader being on the inside, sees the development of the crime and the final snaring of the criminal in a trap of his own making. Dr. Thorndyke, the detective, is a "super" in all respects, deducing results from such an insignificant trifle as the stray hair of a rabbit, or a speck of dust. A story of tense and unusual interest. About Author: Dr. Richard Austin Freeman [1862-1943] was born in London, England; graduated from Middlesex Hospital medical school and served as a surgeon for the Colonial Service. He first began writing with the Romney Pringle stories serialized in Cassell's Magazine in the early 1900s. His first novel, The Golden Pool was written in 1905. His first mystery novel, The Red Thumb Mark, featuring his well-known character, Dr. Thorndyke was written in 1907. An article on Freeman in the Mystery & Detective Annual of 1972 notes: "Freeman paid a great deal of attention to details, and carried out the experiments described in his books to ensure that they worked and would give the expected results. He also went to the trouble of visiting the places he wrote about so that the details in his descriptions were correct." Freeman's most famous character was Dr. John Thorndyke who would be featured in about 30 mystery novels and short story compilations.
