He left the regiment to attend the Staff College course at Camberley in 1943 from where he was posted as Brigade Major of the 6th Airlanding Brigade. From 1944 to 1946 he commanded the 9th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1945.
