During World War II Ivelaw-Chapman was shot down by a German night fighter and became the most senior Bomber Command officer to be captured by the Germans.~~~~~Mr William "Scottie" Brazill DFM FORMER CHAIRMAN AND THEN VICE PRESIDENT ROYAL AIR FORCES ESCAPING SOCIETY Born in India and educated in Scotland, the birthplace of his parents. He joined the RAF in 1942. On the 16th September 1942 the Wellington in which he was returning from Essen was shot down. He baled out in North Belgium and headed south, walking for ten days until he found a village that offered him shelter. After six weeks recuperation from a broken leg, he was escorted by two courageous men to Brussels, interrogated in the Palais de Justice and sheltered by a Resistance leader who provided forged identity cards. Eight weeks later he was put on a train to Paris, thence San Sebastian, Madrid and Seville where he stowed away on a British ship bound for Gibraltar. ~~~~~~~~~ Air Chief Marshal Sir Lewis Hodges KCB CBE DSO DFC FORMER AIR ADC TO THE QUEEN & DEPUTY COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF ALLIED FORCES CENTRAL EUROPE Was with Bomber Command during World War Two and was shot down over France, but managed to rejoin his squadron.
