Heywood station is the eastern terminus of the heritage East Lancashire Railway (although the rail link continues through to Castleton on the Manchester Victoria-Rochdale line, providing a link to the national rail system, used for locomotive transfer purposes). Opened in 2003, the station is situated around 150m further east than the original Heywood station (1841-1970); it has a single platform.
