While in France on the official business of the state of Georgia in 1863, Savannah merchant and Confederate officer Charles Augustus Lafayette Lamar hired Paris Mint engraver Auguste Caque to create a memorial medal for General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. The medals arrived in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1864 (Savannah was blockaded), and most of the mintage remained hidden away until two barrels full were found in 1894 and marketed by the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Confederate Veterans organization. This example boasts a bold strike and very choice surfaces, as well as gorgeous toning. Accompanying the medal is the bottom half of the original round green cardboard box, which is many times rarer than the medal itself, and no doubt is a prime reason why this medal remains is such outstanding condition.
