Description: Here is a very nice and rare old commemorative medal made of a bright copper, in quite pleasing condition overall, measuring app. 1 & 3/16" across, with a plain edge. This pretty political-related piece shows hardly any wear, honestly, and the obverse has acquired a lovely toning over the years, with only some minor spots and light storage marks on the reverse. I have not cleaned or altered its appearance in any manner, and it is one of a series of pieces put out by Brussels engraver August Brichaut in 1878. A related medal in the group, identified in DeWitt's reference work as MVB-B, has the name and dates for that president, where the author mistakenly identifies the engraver as "Brichant". What I'll call the obverse features a truly exquisite eagle, and here, the majestic bird is radiant, with an American shield upon its breast, arrows and an olive branch in its talons. There are thirteen stars in the rays at the top, a banner crossing a cloud reading "E Pluribus Unum" beneath the shield and "Brichaut Dir." at the bottom. The reverse reads "Ulysses S. Grant - 1869", in a border of twenty-four stars. Fine rarity. $90. Please note I am always happy to combine shipping costs should you win more than one of my auctions, and I usually add just a minimal additional cost per item. Your business is sincerely appreciated!
