Description: RARE 1890'S IF FOUND RETURN TO AND RECEIVE REWARD KEYCHAIN FOB ID TAG DOG TAG These date back to about late 1890's. They were used as key tags, key chain fobs, ID tags, trunk tags, dog collar tags, identification tags, foot locker ID tags. Their main purpose was to return lost keys and other important items including dogs, back to their rightful owners. Back in the day, locksmiths would engrave these fobs with their customer's names and addresses. For a small fee, the U.S. Post Office would return lost keys to their rightful owners if the keys had this type of fob. The post office continues this service today. Also, Pet owners would stamp their pet's information on these tags and attach them their collars. Made out of nickel-silver also called German silver. Nickel silver is stronger and more expensive than brass. And, it doesn't tarnish as much as brass. Back then manufacturers chose nickel-silver over brass for higher quality items like these fobs. If you're reading this ad you already know how rare these fobs are. The fact they are blank and not engraved make them even rarer. These were part of an enormous Dallas locksmith collection with items dating back to the Civil War era. The fobs have been in storage for decades and they look gorgeous!
