Description: This is an extremely rare 18th-century Southern Bookplate that belonged to Josias Allston, one of the wealthier men in South Carolina. He was the uncle of Famous American artist Washington Allston and when he died the executor of his will was none other than General Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. This bookplate dates to pre American Revolution as Allston died in 1776. It is still attached to the cover of a book. This lot is just the detached front board of the book with the bookplate adhered to the pastedown. One of the earlier South Carolina families and an early example of a Southern bookplate. Later inscriptions on the pastedown from children, including Jane Thurston 1817.
