Rare 1978 New York City MARATHON Finisher MEDAL w/CASE ~ Abbott World Majors NYC

Description: Up for sale is this Rare, ORIGINAL 1978 New York City Marathon FINISHER Medal in Original Case. The ribbon is blue / yellow, back has the old style C-clasp, and the bronze-colored medal is attached to the ribbon. Total length of ribbon + medal is 3 3/8", while round medal itself is 1 1/2" across. The race started in 1970, but finisher medals were NOT issued until 1976. As result, this 1978 Finisher Medal is the 3rd year finisher medals were issued, which is why it is bronze colored. Please read the seller notes for condition info. This would make an OUTSTANDING addition to ANY Marathon, NYC, Running, Track & Field, Sports Medals or historical collection. From the limited info I could gather: The New York Road Runners club started the NYC Marathon in 1970. To celebrate the Bicentennial of the United States in 1976 they made a one-off change to the race course so it would go through ALL FIVE NYC boroughs. They also created the first NYC Marathon Finisher MEDAL which was given to all those that completed the marathon. HOWEVER the 1976 marathon was SO successful that they kept the 5-boroughs road course permanently as well as the tradition of giving medals to everyone that finished the race. In 1976 the medal had a gold finish, in 1977 it was a silver finish, and in 1978 -- as expected -- the medal had a bronze finish. Today the TCS New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world and considered by many to be the preeminent marathon race among the Abbot World Marathon Majors.
