Description: Rare 19th Century Chinese Benjarong Bencharong Stem Plate Made for the Thai Market We are pleased to offer for your consideration this large and rare 19th century antique benjarong stem plate made in China for the Kingdom of Siam market. The benjarong stem plate features a reddish brown ground on both sides of the rounded plate and is decorated overall with a blue, pink and green floral lattice. There is a yellow and red floral medallion in the center surrounded by three small blue and yellow bands. The flat, fancy edged border inwardly tilts towards the center; is in blue color with a stylized band of pink flowers and green leaves. Traces of gold highlights on the reddish brown ground can be seen, but worn due to previous use. This plate sits on a flared foot encircled by two stylized floral bands in blue and yellow. Large examples are rare and not often offered for sale. This stem plate is in fine antique condition with some earlier restorations done on the underside of the fancy rim. It has normal, expected wear to the top surfaces from previous use and handling. The stem plate was acquired as you see it, in 1979 while we were in Bangkok at an antique store called the Monogram. A finer example may never be found! A rare find for the antique benjarong collector! Please take the time to carefully examine all the photographs for more details. Contact seller if you have any questions or if you require additional photographs for inspection. Measurements: The stem plate stands approximately 4-1/2” in height. It measures approximately 9-3/4” in diameter across the top rim and 5” in diameter at the base. The large stem plate weighs approximately 3 lbs, 4 ounces. All measurements are approximate, but close. Condition: We carefully examined this item. Some early restoration appears around some of the fancy edged border to repair chips. This restoration appears around the underside near the rim. There is a kiln fire break at the foot of the base occurring at the time of making (see photographs). The top surfaces have wear from previous use. The gold highlights on the reddish brown ground are worn, but traces of it remain visible. This is a rare antique and very hard to find item. Any restorations or minor flaws should be excused as most antique pieces are not readily available. Please take the time to carefully examine all the photographs for more details.
