This rare Antique AMBER VALLERYSTHAL DOG ON STEAMER RUG Root Beer Glass Covered Dish: - has well-modeled top cover in high relief depicting a large long-haired dog on alert, in a recumbent pose. The dog’s head is upright, front paws in front are crossed. Back legs are tucked under the body with one back paw showing. The tail is bushy. He resides atop a patterned steamer rug with fringe edge; - the base is beautifully formed and graduates down in size to the bottom; it is decorated with flower blooms in high relief; - the octagonal base has a raised rim edge, elevating the base slightly; - has a fitted rim between top and bottom; the cover has a narrow rim projecting downward from the top so that it slips neatly inside the edge of the base to hold it secure; - is mold formed pressed glass, well modeled in deep relief with very good design and detail, and is Amber Glass, also known as Root Beer Glass, with opalescence and “fire”; - is marked on the inside bottom VALLERYSTHAL; - was listed in the Vallerysthal Sales Catalogue of 1908. The Rare Antique AMBER VALLERYSTHAL DOG ON STEAMER RUG Root Beer Glass Covered Dish is in very good condition, noting a 3/8 in, x 1/4 in. shallow chip on underside corner of the top lid the back right side - not visible when the lid is on. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing. Overall, this work is sound, having no other chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Vallerysthal Glass Vallerysthal is a glass house with a complicated history. It all really started in 1836, in Lorraine, as Societe des Verreries Reunies de Plaine de Walsch et Vallerysthal, which became Klenglin et Cie in 1855. The mix of Bohemian and French glass workers created interesting opaline and decorative glass, and in 1870, this area became part of Germany. However, most of their sales had been to France, and as they were no longer within the French territory, they found it difficult to export their glass to France. One way around this problem was to purchase Portieux which was in Vosges, and whilst the head office was in Vallerysthal, they could export through Portieux. The new name was registered in French and in German, Verreries Reunies de Vallerysthal et Portieux, and Vereingte Glashutten Von Vallerysthal und Portieux. Desire Christian was commissioned to design cameo glass with floral and scenic themes. Sometimes enamel or gilding was added. After the First World War, the company was returned to French rule. They produced a lot of unusual lidded animal and bird bowls, such as hens on baskets and standing cockerels. From the end of the Second World War, it had a difficult time. The Vallerysthal factory closed in 1977, reopened in 1986. The Portieux factory joined the French Crystal Company in 1982 but went bankrupt once and then again as Arts from Portieux. It was bought by Groupe Faience Niderviller in 1996. Portieux still makes some hand-blown glass ware and glass using old moulds. Vallerysthal remains a trading name.
