Description: The interior of this nappy has a brilliant white glaze that, at the time, was thought to make the piece more sanitary. This belief originated in England and spread to the U.S. during the 1850’s. Potters began applying white glaze to the interior of pitchers, mugs, bowls, nappies, custards and plates. Very few of these pieces survive in good condition. These pieces can be dated from 1850 through the 1870’s when potters stopped applying white glaze for this purpose. This is a large nappy measuring 11 ½” in diameter by 3” high. The nappy is in original mint condition with no damage or repairs and rings when you tap the rim.
