Description: An important antique English Sheffield / American Bowie knife circa 1855. It appears to be in excellent condition and has not been abused or cleaned as far as I know. It was purchased from an Ohio estate where it had been past down in the family until I aquired it. Provenance goes back to the mid 1850's, prior to the Civil War. Thanks to a very helpful ebayer the knife has been identified as having been made by Edward Barnes and bears his prominent U. S. and 5 pointed star makers mark at the base of the 7 inch bowie clip blade. The leather sheath is original and in remarkable condition with the belt loop still attached, although it has come loose on one side. Overall length is 12 1/2 inches. The blade is quite heavy and there is no doubt it had one primary purpose. I am guessing it was gently sharpened maybe once or twice back in the day, nevertheless you can still see the vast majority of the original polish on the blade. There are no nicks that I can see or feel. The tulip style handle is German silver of the best quality and features exquisite scroll work. It is seen on other Barnes Bowies' of the period. If you have any questions email hobbit7atearthlinkdotnet or dial eight one eight six three two zero zero six two. I ship worldwide.
