Description: This rare antique souvenir mug was inspired by the famous Marble House mansion located in Newport, RI. The mug features a beautiful mauve glaze on white with black line transfer of this famous Vanderbilt Mansion, here titled “The Marble Palace.” This is a rare early 20th century souvenir of one of Newport’s great collection of “summer cottages” built for the rich and famous. making it is an excellent addition to any collection of Newport memorabilia. The house was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and begun in 1888 and completed in 1892 for Alva & Kissam Vanderbilt. The mug was produced in the Art Nouveau style, which helps date this porcelain mug. It was merchandised by Charles D. Dadley, a local shop owner, and represents the interest visitors to Newport held for these impressive masterpieces of architecture. The mug was made in Germany around 1910. Condition: when I found this mug, I thought it was in excellent condition, but I was wrong. There is an almost invisible crack that runs up from the base 1.6” up the mug’s wall, and this crack continues from the edge of the foot rim, for about 1.3” toward the mark on the bottom. Though the rim rings, when hit with my finger, there is a crack, no matter how tight it is. Beware! I still think it is a super piece, but it is as-is. 3” High 2.7” Diameter (top) 3.4” Wide (including the handle)
