Condition: This listing is for the Rare 1948 Bowman #36 Stan Musial Rookie Card which has been placed in a plastic protective cover by the professional grading company SGC. The Bowman Musial Rookie Card is being offered in a fair to good pre-owned condition. SGC has given a grade of 1. There are no tears, or rips, or holes. The black and white image of Stan Musial has not measurably faded or discolored. In fact, the photo image of Stan Musial is clean and clear. There are some creases that can best be seen starting on the right upper corner and running across Musial's Cardinals cap. The corners are soft but they are not bent. The left border is larger than the other three borders, however, the image is still nicely centered. The back of the card is in good overall condition. The print is clear and clean except for a couple of blank spots on the top section which may be due to wear but is more likely the way that the card was manufactured by Bowman Gum, Inc. This is truly a spectacular and highly collectible sports card of a legend of baseball. Sold 'As Is'. Please refer to the 12 photos included in this listing. Description: This listing is not about just any professional athlete. This is a very rare authentic 1948 Bowman Sports Card #36 of the legendary sports figure Stan 'The Man' Musial. Still considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time. The Bowman Musial Card is extra-special because it is his ROOKIE CARD. Stan Musial baseball cards continue to be extremely popular among collectors. Although his career spanned 22 seasons, he has fewer baseball cards to collect than say, Willie Mays, who also played 22 seasons. Musial was under contract with Bowman through 1953 so you won't find Musial on either of the legendary 1952 or 1953 Topps sets. From 1954 to 1957, Musial did not appear on Bowman or Topps baseball cards at all stating that he "just didn't want to sign a contract for cards".One of two Stan Musial rookie cards, the 1948 Bowman #36 is considered the more popular of the two. And along with the Yogi Berra rookie, Musial's card is one of the most valuable baseball card and one of the best investments in sports card trading. Musial's Bowman rookie card shows a young black and white head shot of Musial with a serious and focused look on his face, a stark contrast to most other Musial cards showing off his crooked smile. Professional Grading: SGC Grading 1 Value: Trending Upwards Measurements:~1.75" x ~1.30" Color: Black and White Stan Musial: Stan 'The Man' Musial was born on November 21, 1920 in Donora, Pennsylvania. Stan Musial had a 22-year playing career with the St. Louis Cardinals and he won seven National League batting championships and established himself as one of the game's greatest hitters and ranked as one of the very best major league baseball players of all time. Musial began his career as a pitcher but later switched to the outfield. In 1942 Musial became a starter with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he teamed with Terry Moore and Enos Slaughter to form what would become one of the finest offensive and defensive combinations in baseball history. In fact, they won the 1942 World Series. In 1943, Musial led the NL with 220 hits and a batting average of .357 and he won the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at just age 22. After leading the Cardinals to another World Series title in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for service during World War II. Returning to baseball in 1946, he won a second MVP award after batting .365 as the Cardinals captured their third World Series championship in five years. Musial had his greatest season statistically in 1948 as he posted career-high and league leading totals in a .376 batting average and 230 hits, 135 runs, and131 runs batted in, which resulted in his third MVP award. After 1948, Musial led the league in batting average four more times and in runs three times and once in hits. He retired after the 1963 season with a career batting average of .331. At the time of his retirement, his totals of times at bat (10,972), hits (3,630) and runs scored (1,949) which was second only to those of Ty Cobb and his total of runs batted in (1,951) was exceeded only by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Musial also set a major league record with 1,377 extra-base hits (broken by Hank Aaron in 1973). He was named an All-Star in 20 of his 22 seasons and elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. In 2011, Musial was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Grading: Obviously, the condition of almost any collectible drives its value. My issue with all of this is that the Grading Scale from the various professional grading companies seems to be driving the passion of collecting instead of the natural enthusiasm that comes from the love of sports and collecting the sports trading card of your favorite point guard, quarterback or home run hitter. Also, after researching the issue of grading vs. not grading, there are valid and strong arguments on both sides. All too often, however, the results of sold items reveal that once graded, many cards will return less value than if they were sold raw. In addition, from a small sample of cards that I got professionally graded, during a featured sports card show and collectibles convention, I asked a few very seasoned collectors and sports trading cards and sports memorabilia retailers from around the country, to review my cards and to compare the professional grading score received. And, if you were wondering, they used the same or similar tools of the trade to review each card. In nearly 100% of the cases, they disagreed with the the professional grading companies grading score. That is why I believe it is almost equally important that you get to know the Seller and each Buyer should learn how to judge the condition of a card for themselves. Only a small number of my 1000s of sports cards (baseball, basketball, hockey and football) have been professionally graded. I will do my very best to describe the condition of each card using the most accurate details. If you need more details or if you believe that I left some detail out, please feel free to message me. Authentication: I understand that authentication has become an issue in the sports cards and memorabilia collecting world. Please know and be completely confident that ALL OF MY SPORTS CARDS AND MEMORABILIA ARE AUTHENTIC AND HAVE NOT BEEN ALTERED OR MODIFIED IN ANY WAY, even if they have not been professionally graded. Buy-It-Now Price: My 'Buy-It-Now" price is based on the review of recently sold (3-6 months) same sports card and similar condition (graded and ungraded) along with the rarity of the card and, if the information is available, I look for any trends in value (upward or downward). Some of the auction items that I purchased over the years, I really needed, and many other winning auction items (like 100 pairs of chopsticks - REALLY) after some embarrassment and family criticism, have made for a good story. It is my sincere goal to never embarrass any buyer, and to attempt to make every buyer who purchases one of my listed auction items more than satisfied. All of the auction items (whether pre-owned or brand new) come from a clean, pet-free, smoke-free, and mold-free home. I will always try and address any criticism or complaint in a prompt and thorough manner. I have procrastinated listing items on Ebay long enough and now it is time to say goodbye to some of my family's belongings. Happy Bidding!!!
