Description: A scarce copy of "A House in Lapa" (Uma Casa na Lapa) by Jose Sarmento de Matos. It tells the story of the building located at Rua do Sacramento à Lapa, 21, the current headquarters of the Luso-American Development Foundation. It is a story of the people who, since 1757, have lived in this house, leaving their mark and memory here. From the builder, the contractor for diamonds in Brazil, João Fernandes de Oliveira, passing through, among others, the Viscounts of Santarém and Beire or Cardinal Di Pietro, apostolic nuncio, a succession of personalities is linked that allow a look at the the last two hundred years of Lisbon's history. In addition, the study of the House allowed us to unravel the urbanization process of the entire neighborhood, bringing surprises to the reading of a time dominated by the figure of the Marquês de Pombal. Oversized hardcover (about 14" x 10"), with dust jacket, 240 pages, published in 1994. Illustrated with many photographs, in Portugese. Overall condition very good with tight, square binding and clean interior pages (no writing or highlighting). Please ask any and all questions and see my other auctions for similar items.
