Description: Original tintype of Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857), American explorer and medical officer in the U.S. Navy. Kane was a member of artic explorations searching for the lost John Franklin expedition. This circa 1857, cased, 1/6 tintype is an engraved portrait, probably from his book, Arctic Explorations. The original portrait, a daguerreotype, was taken by Mathew Brady in about 1852. I suspect that this tintype was probably made upon the news of Kane's death in February 1857. The tintype is in overall very good antique condition. It's on a heavy Neff's patent 1856 iron sheet, in full case behind mat and cover glass. The mat caused some abrasions which are mostly hidden, and there is one age-related spot on the tip of his nose, otherwise the condition is excellent. The case is very nice though the covers are separated.Boxed & insured Priority Mail is included. Boxed Express Mail is also available at checkout.Visit my store for more Civil War images.
