Description: Here is a rare extra large Parian portrait bust commemorating Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, modeled by R J Morris, sculptor, in good antique condition, measuring a full 21” tall , showing her morning dress and lace veil finely detailed , wearing a cameo of Prince Albert on her left breast, all raised on a circular socle titled to the reverse “Victoria”, and impressed with the manufacturer’s mark “R &L” for Robinson & Leadbeater. The plinth is attached with original brass bolt. Victoria’s with a small chip to top of crown and missing both earrings , as pictured . Rear left shows a tight firing flaw, as pictured . This bust is quite common in the smaller sizes issued by the Art Unions of London, but very difficult to find in this the largest size made by the Robinson & Leadbeater manufactory circa 1897. R & L issued two versions of this bust. This example is the earlier of the two and was made with the impractical earrings that were attached during a second firing process, now absent. More dramatically, this version shows a much more realistic portrayal of the Queen with sagging jowls , and furrowed brow. The later edition of the bust shows much reworking of the wax model to produce a much younger, smoother version of the Queen, in addition to the omission of the earrings.
