A professor of Art at the University of Alabama, he was an oil and watercolor painter, a ceramic and metal sculptor, a printmaker, and a glass artist.] Engle Studios produced decorative designs for home décor which were sold at leading department stores such as Macy's, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman. His works were featured in popular magazines including House Beautiful and Better Homes and Gardens. He designed the crest of the 1949 Ford. In 1964, Engle was commissioned to create more than 20 pieces of work for the interior of the newly constructed Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tuscaloosa. Among the works he produced were the Stations of the Cross, an altar rail, statues of the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph, and two panels depicting the apostles. (His multi-colored glass mosaics were destroyed when the church was torn down and replaced in 2009.) He was the subject of a retrospective with his wife at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center on the campus of the University of Alabama in 2017."
