Description: Offered is this truly massive 18th century blacksmith forged iron barrel key measuring 13.5inches long weighing 1154 grams [2.54lbs]. This is the largest barrel key I have ever known of that was a real key not being any kind of decorative item. Professionally crafted just like smaller examples from the period. The closest examples I have seen large European church keys but those examples are of a different design and of a very crude construction meant to open less complicated wood locks therefor their bits are not as precisely cut. One can only imagine the size or importance of the door this key opened and especially what was behind it!. The size of the lock that this key fit must weigh at least 100-150lbs.The barrel is approximately the diameter of a shotgun barrel and tapers down to a smaller diameter at the bit having a 3mm taper difference. Could very well be the largest known example of its kind making for the perfect center piece of any lock or key collection as this is the rarest of the rare! Condition is very good for its age as there are no structural issues but does have some iron pitting, remains of old paint here and there also the bit does have a small chunk of iron that has broken off a long time ago [photo]
