Description: **IMPORTANT WILLIAM NICHOLSON R.S.A. PORTRAIT PAINTING** William Nicholson first exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in 1808 and although he moved to Edinburgh in 1814, continued to exhibit in London until 1822. He exhibited a portrait entitled Boy with a Newfoundland dog at the Edinburgh Exhibition Society in 1814, no. 162, which may be the present picture. He is best known for his miniature and watercolor portraits of literary figures of the day. He was one of the founder members of the Royal Scottish Academy and became its first Secretary. He died in Edinburgh in 1844. Recently acquired from a grand estate filled with quality antiques, passed down many generations. The 20.5" x 19.5" gilt wood and gesso frame seems to be original and or of the period. It shows some wear and minor loss commensurate of it's age. The oil on canvas painting shows some craquelure commensurate of it's age. The verso shows, in what appears to be lead, the signature of "William Nicholson, R.S.A" and also the name of the sitter which I have been unable to decipher but added pictures of. **PLEASE NOTE THE SHIPPING PRICE QUOTED IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE** I would prefer to have this wrapped by a professional company (OF YOUR CHOICE), with full insurance to to ensure a safe arrival. William Nicholson (25 December 1781 – 16 August 1844) was a British painter of portraits and other subjects. He was among the founding members of the Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1826, and was its first secretary.[1]LifeNicholson was born at Ovingham, in Northumberland, on 25 December 1781, to James Nicholson, a schoolmaster from that village, and his wife Elizabeth, née Orton. He was probably educated at the grammar school in Newcastle-on-Tyne where his father taught.[1] When he left school, he studied painting under the Italian painter Boniface Muss (or Musso) in Newcastle. He received some commissions to paint portrait miniatures, both in Newcastle and in Hull.[1] He also painted larger works, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1808.[1]In 1814 he moved to Edinburgh, where he painted portraits both in oil and in water-colour, but also painted landscapes and animal, architectural and genre subjects.[1] With the architect Thomas Hamilton, Nicholson was among the founding members of the Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1826, and from that year until 1830 was its first secretary.[1]WorkIn 1818, Nicholson began publishing his Portraits of Distinguished Living Characters of Scotland, a series of etchings based on his own paintings and those of other artists; it was not completed. He later published some other etchings of his portrait paintings. His subjects included Sir William Allan, James Hogg (the "Ettrick Shepherd"), Lord Jeffrey, Professor John Playfair, Sir Walter Scott, George Thomson, James Watt and John Wilson; there were also etchings of a portrait of Robert Burns by Alexander Nasmyth and of a self-portrait by Sir Henry Raeburn.[1] Bid with confidence as I have been a trusted seller for 25 years.
