Description: This woven piece demonstrates the rattlesnake design and is an estimated 100 years old. Cylindrical baskets such as this are a rarity. "Paiute" is a term used to label three distinct groups, each of which use a language within the Numic group of Uto-Aztecan languages. The traditional home of the Northern Paiute people is the Great Basin region of the U.S., consisting of land in Nevada, Oregon, and California. The Sothern Paiute are of southwestern Utah, southern Nevada, and northern Arizona. The Mono people resided in Central California. NOTE that we did confer with others before listing this item to confirm its origins. To us, it also had qualities similar to Tlingit baskets. It measures about 6.25" tall and may date to the 1930s.
