Description: This exceptionally scarce autograph signed letter, offered together with two prints which depict the letter's author, is by Louis-Antoine Bougainville (1729-1811), the famed French navigator, military officer, and mathematician. In his letter to an unknown correspondent, dated October 13, 1804, Bougainville recommends an acquaintance for some occupation that will help him feed his family of eight children. The size of the Bougainville letter is8 1/4 inches by6 1/2 inches. There is also an accompanying sheet with this lot which provides a translation of the letter from French to English and gives additional details on Bougainville's life (see photo 5). All of the items are in good condition, apart from some foxing and minor restoration and age toning to the Bougainville prints and some flattened folds to the letter. The letter also has several, almost imperceptible tiny punctures to the sheet at the lower left (see photo 8), but there is no loss to the text. Each item has some old professional mounting tape at the top, which can easily be removed should the buyer wish to do so. Signed Bougainville letters are very scarce, and this letter with its accompanying prints would be an excellent addition to any serious collection of historical letters and documents. We are offering it here on eBay with a very attractive buy-it-now price and a best offer option.
