He studied in Koln and Dusseldorf, Germany, as well as Paris, France. Haltern taught drawing and etching at Brigham Young University as a professor of art. He wrote a book, and his works have been features in the Harris Fine Arts Center on Brigham Young University campus and the Springville Museum.
