Description: This is an exceptionally rare example of US Navy gear known as a "Survivors Sling". This type of sling was used on Navy Rescue Helicopters and used as a hoist sling for people in the water. I purchased this sling a while ago from the estate of a collector of NASA artifacts and related items and was told that this sling was used to hoist one of the Mercury 7 aboard the recovery helicopter. I have NO provenance for this so I cannot prove or disprove whether or not it was used as such, but the collection that I purchased it from was quite impressive, having many, MANY well documented artifacts from all three early programs (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo), enough that I personally believe the origin story for this artifact, however I make no promises since I cannot prove it on paper and it is important to make that perfectly clear. I am selling this as it sits, as-is, no returns. Before you ask, no, I do not know the name of the collector and I do not have any other artifacts in my possession. I purchased this a few years back and have had it in my collection ever since. What you see is what you get.
