Description: Beautiful solid marble stone decorative obelisk, circa 1970s. The center core of the obelisk is Botticino marble, flanked on two sides with contrasting ancient stone. Features beautiful striation and patterns in the stones natural beauty. The piece sits 5 inches high x 1.5 inches across base. Excellent condition. No cracks or significant chips. HISTORIQUE: The 'obelisk'properly termed a stele or, in the local languages, Tigrinya: hawelt; and church Ge'ez: haweltiis found along with many other stelae in the city of Axum in modern-day Ethiopia. Their function was to be "markers" for underground burial chambers. *This process replaces organic materials in rock or stone with minerals that seep into the rock or other object eventually hardening.
