This original newspaper contains an inside page headline: "WASP AND FROLIC" with a long detailed account of this early War of 1812 naval battle, won by the US Warship "USS WASP."One newspaper especially defined by its era was The War, a New York-based publication that ran from 1812 to 1815. The newspaper’s very existence was precipitated by the War of 1812, and the description in the masthead proclaimed it as “being a faithful record of the transactions of the war.” The editor, Samuel Woodworth, declared that not only would the paper “support a love of country, and excite a contempt of danger” and “hand down to posterity the names of those heroes of America,” it would also educate its readers in “the art of war.”The War preached to pro-war followers, and to the opposition Woodworth pledged to “detect and hold up to contempt or punishment every effort of internal enemies” of the “just cause.” Regardless of its editorial bias, the newspaper also provided firm information to digest. Transcriptions of presidential addresses, correspondence between diplomats, descriptions of military battles, and other official business were printed weekly. Families of soldiers and sailors probably found the most current news in publications like The War, which offered a broad overview of the conflict, including laws and negotiations, military movements, and descriptions of armaments and types of sea-going vessels. Those seeking moral support found it in impassioned editorials, songs, tales of “female patriotism,” and personal accounts of action witnessed. USS Wasp versus HMS Frolic was an action fought in the Atlantic on October 18th 1812, the sloop-of-war USS Wasp, was commanded by Master Commandant Jacob Jones, and the brig-sloop Frolic, was under Commander Thomas Whinyates. There was strong wind blowing causing a heavy sea on the day of the battle. Both vessels carried a main armament of short-range carronades. There was no attempt at maneuvering to gain advantage before the fight. They closed to within hail range and opened fire. The Wasp's crew fired low, into their opponent's hull, while the Frolic's gunners fired high, to disable their enemy's rigging. As the action continued, the ships closed together. After 22 minutes, Wasp's rigging was damaged, making the ship unmanageable. Frolic was severely damaged, and the crew had suffered heavy casualties. With both vessels incapable of being handled, Wasp drew slightly ahead and Frolic collided with the American ship. Wasp fired a final raking broadside. Then the American sailors boarded Frolic to find that every British officer and over half the crew were wounded or dead. The Americans captured the British vessel, but shortly thereafter both vessels were captured by a British ship of the line which happened upon the scene of the battle. Very good condition.
