Dimensions: 10 1/4" Diameter The Foley China W&Co England mark Introduced 1895, Discontinued 1910 In 1822 John King Knight established a pottery manufacturing business near Stoke-on-Trent in an area called "The Foley" which lies between Fenton and Longton adjacent to King Street. In 1852 John King night invited Henry Wileman to join him in partnership. In 1856 John King Knight retired and so Henry Wileman became the sole proprietor of the Foley Potteries. Meanwhile the Foley China Works were opened in the same area by the Robinson family in 1850. In 1872 James Wileman, Henry Wileman's son, took Joseph Shelley, who had joined the company in 1862 as a travelling salesman, into partnership in the Foley China Works, trading as Wileman & Company. In 1884 James Wileman retired from the china works which then became a Shelley family business. Also in 1884 the company began registering designs with the Patent Office beginning with pattern 11446. We believe that this collection was designed in 1879 based on the pattern number. In 1885 the other pottery, The Foley China works was taken over by Elijah Brain. The two competitors continued under the Shelley and Brain families until 1910 when a lawsuit ended with Wileman & Co losing rights to the Foley China name. Both firms have long since closed.
