Ready-to-Use! Fine-tuned Vintage Kanna,72mm Suzuka/鈴鹿, New Dai.

Description: Introduction: You may have noticed that my price is a bit higher than other eBay vendors. While that may be true, my price is based on offering a ready-to-use product that has been cleaned, adjusted and fine-tuned to work as designed. “Yes, you can buy a used Kanna on eBay for $30-$50 US, but you will not be buying a Kanna that is set up properly and ready to use. Disassembly, cleaning, sharpening of the blade and chip breaker, flattening of the sole of the Kanna and tuning it to the traditional two-contact-point configuration, then testing (see my videos of performance) will take you many hours, especially if you are untrained at setting up Japanese hand planes. It is generally said that even a carpenter needs five years to become proficient with a plane, and it is the most difficult tool among carpentry tools. My pricing includes all the work needed to restore the Kanna to a fine-tuned level of performance as shown in my videos. And it is ready for you to use right out of the box so you can focus on learning how to use the plane. ============================================ Product: This is a fine-tuned hand plane “Kanna” for ready to use. Please check video and photo and feel free to contact me for more details. 鈴鹿/Suzua (Size: 72mm, Sum/寸-8), Vintage Original, Single blade, New Dai. Blade: 72mm Wide (lower) x 111mm Tall, used. Maybe Blue steel. Blacksmith: Fusaichi Yamaguchi / 山口房一. The left side of the blade is engraved with "Masterpiece of Hyakuren (百錬之名作)," indicating that it was made by Yamaguchi Fusaichi, a blacksmith from Miki, Banshu. He is the third generation of his family, following in the footsteps of Shotaro Yamaguchi, Fusataro Yamaguchi, and Fusakazu Yamaguchi. Fusakazu has already passed away and is no longer making planes. The plane blades manufactured by Fusaichi are of extremely high quality, and are highly coveted items among enthusiasts, but are now difficult to obtain. The back of the blade is stamped with "Made with care (謹製)". There is no chip breaker. Wood Bottom Dai: 89mm Wide x291mm Length x 36mm Thickness, NEW. The surface of the Dai-sole is tuned in two-point touch. Although the Dai is new, I applied epoxy resin to it to adjust the left and right balance when inserting the blade. This prevents the Dai from drying out. At first glance, the gap is so narrow that you would think there is no gap at all. If you hold it up to a light, the light will leak out and you will know there is a gap. This narrow gap is the most important requirement for Single Blade. Since there is no chip-breaker, this narrow gap stops the grain of the wood. The lack of a chip-breaker is often seen as a disadvantage, but in fact it is the opposite. Single Blade planes are easy to maintain, and the cutting edge can be easily adjusted, so professional woodworkers, including furniture makers, often use Single Blade planes. The planing test was performed on the usual SPF wood forward and on a mixture of reverse and forward surfaces with knots. I was able to plane on knotty surfaces without any problems resulting in a glossy and smooth surface. In the case of the forward surface, it is very easy to plane it even without chip-breaker. ============================================ You may think that the price is a little high. You can buy a used, unmaintained Kanna around $30 to $50 on the eBay, but if you don't have much experience with Kanna, maintaining it so that it can be used properly will not work even if you spend days doing it properly. It is generally said that even a carpenter needs five years to become proficient with a plane, and it is the most difficult tool among carpentry tools. To improve your Kanna skills, it is essential to first use a plane that has been fully maintained for immediate use. I think that the price is worth the time and effort of maintenance. In particular, the superiority of Japanese Kanna is more evident with a new base. ============================================ References: How to set-up Kanna: Learn – Learn – Kakuri Sangyo (kakuritools.com) Shipping: Japan POST, about 2 weeks.I just changed my shipping fee in mid-December, but I'm going to change it back. I recently sent a Kanna to Europe, but it took 2 months to be delivered, and it arrived in terrible condition, completely unusable. So I'm going to send a replacement Kanna. Based on this experience, I think it's necessary to subscribe to compensation insurance when sending Kanna over $80, so I will stop using the cheap shipping method and go back to a safe and secure method. These charges are the buyer s responsibility. ·Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.
