Description: Recollections of James Francis Riley 1838 - 1918 Copyright 1959 by John R. James, Independence, Missouri Signed and dated on front cover by John R. James, who is the grandson of James Francis Riley. Stiff paper wraps, 8 1/8" x 5 3/8", 82 pages Illustrated with one picture of the Riley Family photo. A wonderful, historical account of life on the plains from 1838 to 1918. James Francis Riley was known as a bullwhacker in the early Pioneer days of Missouri and Kansas. From 1859 to 1864 he made numerous trips hauling freight by ox and mule trains from Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas to Salt Lake City, Utah, and Fort Union and Albuquerque, New Mexico on the Santa Fe Trail. He tells of the border troubles between Kansas and Missouri in 1862 and his encounters with the Kansas Jayhawkers, the Missouri Bushwackers and Quantrell. He relates many encounters with Indians in his travels. He tells of arriving in Olathe, Kansas on April 15, 1865 and asking someone why the flag was at half mast. He was then told of President Lincoln's assassination by John Wilkes Booth the previous night. Some creasing to stiff paper wraps that does not affect pages. A few pages have light pencil underlining and a few pages have parentheses in margins in ink. Author's signature and date on front cover have a slight blur from a damp stain at lower outer corner.
