Legend: Interior of a 15-16th Century Home, Bathing Habits : Although toward the end of the middle ages all manors had their private apartments for a long time, it was always in this room that visitors found the entire family surrounded with other house servants who were permitted to do their work in presence of the masters. This mixture of domestic services and habits of luxury is what gives a particular interest to the room represented here. The winter is about to arrive, the door is open and the outside landscape forms a contrast with the room which is well heated by the burning logs in the high chimney. The master of the place arrives and throws his gloves on the table covered with one of the velvety carpets called sarrazinoises. This gentleman finds his world in the pleasures of game and conversation. The mistress of the house sits on a lounge in the shape of a folding stool, reasons with a visitor, while a damoiseau distributes cards to hers young partner, resting on a cushion. Behind these groups of people, is a maid attending to the child; a gentleman and a lady take advantage of all the heat and the maid prepares to throw an armful of small wood into the fire. The architecture of this room is one that prceeded the Renaissance style. The entrance is framed with marble columns, the fireplace is decorated with bas-reliefs. Near the window, one finds a birdcage wit. The second illustrations depicts bathing habits in the middle ages. The lady delivers itself to a very incomplete and especially very belated body toilet, because, except of her bare legs she is fully dressed. Little water were necessary there definitely, and this would explain the small size of the tub. Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy!
