REPRODUCTION A.C. GILBERT ERECTOR SET ‘ED’ TRIPLE-DRUM HOIST

Description: Offered here is a reproduction A.C. Gilbert Erector part number ED triple-drum hoist. The ED was offered only in 1927. It was included in the No. 8 Trumodel and No. 10 9-drawer sets. This part is nearly impossible to find in its original form, so don’t miss your chance to pick up an excellent reproduction! I’ll give a quick (well, quick by my standards . . .) explanation of the hoist. The gearing could be changed by the model builder; this is the “typical” function of the part. First, why are TWO cranks on a TRIPLE-DRUM hoist and not three? The upper crank is usually set up so it can slide side to side. In one position, the P13 pinion gear on the crank axle engages just the upper drum gear axle letting that drum rotate relative to the middle drum. When the upper crank is slid in the opposite direction, the P13 pinion engages gears on the upper and middle drum axles so they rotate simultaneously. The upper/middle drums were typically strung to a BM clamshell bucket. The BM was rigged with two strings, one to raise/lower the bucket and the other to open/close the bucket. The open/close string was run to the upper drum (since it could rotate independently of the middle bucket). The middle drum has a friction brake on it to prevent the BM from free-falling when its axle gear is not engaged with the crank pinion. The lower crank axle contains the lower drum. This was typically strung to a crane boom. The opposite side of the lower crank axle has a P49 gear which engages a BF ratchet. The BF let the crank rotate in just one direction, this prevented a raised boom from crashing to the floor. The boom could be lowered by manually rotating the BF ratchet back to take it out of engagement with the P49 gear thus allowing the axle/drum to rotate in the opposite direction. Don’t hesitate to ask questions through eBay’s messaging service. Payment is through eBay’s payment system, shipping via USPS Priority Mail in a 7” x 7” x 6” box weighing 1.5 lbs. NOTE: The manual pages and model photos showing the ED hoist “in action” ARE NOT included with this auction. This auction is for ONE (1) reproduction ‘ED’ triple-drum hoist ONLY. NOTE: I combine shipping when possible. If you win multiple auctions, I will send an invoice with combined shipping. However, if you jump the gun and complete eBay’s checkout, I will still combine shipping and refund you the difference. If you are interested in learning more about Gilbert Erector sets, Google ACGHS for the home page of the A. C. Gilbert Heritage Society. Included in the photos is a sample page of an Erector parts guide I wrote about 10 years ago; it details the variations of all of the parts used between 1933 – 1962 and is available as a free download from the ACGHS website. Another trivial fact; the ACGHS past president and webmaster is one of A. C. Gilbert’s grandsons!
