Description: Mata Ortiz Blackware Pottery Jar by Reynaldo Quezada Size: 9" Diameter x 8" H Reynaldo Quezada (Mexican, Mata Ortiz, 1940-present) Signed Reynaldo Quezada on the underside, a stunning, black-glazed olla vessel decorated with tooled zigzag motifs across the surface from rim to the circular base with the signature. This is his signature "tejido pattern" or cloth-texture incised into the lustrous black surface to reveal the matte layer below. Reynaldo Quezada learned to create pottery over 30 years ago from his brothers - Juan and Nicolas Quezada. He then worked with his sister Consolacion to refine the technique of creating polished, black textured vessels that made him famous. Purchased in Santa Fe, NM about 15 years ago.
