Description: Rheims Cathedral Etching J Alphege Brewer Emil Jacobi Re-Proof 1914 Antique Re-Proof using the phototype process of J. Alphege Brewer's 1914 engraving of the west view of Rheims Cathedral in France. At the beginning of the World War I, Brewer completed his first etching of the West Front of the Rheims Cathedral. This original etching was published in December 1914 and the French flags flying atop the towers showed Brewer's solidarity with France's war efforts. This etching, in an oversight by Brewer, was published without a separate, specific U.S. copyright.Taking advantage of this situation, Emil Jacobi reproduced his re-proof of Brewer's etching of the cathedral's exterior, paired with Brewer’s interior view of the cathedral's Rose Windows. Sales of these 1914 prints in the U.S. helped foster sympathy in the American public for the Allied cause in the Great War.Subsequent editions of Brewer's etchings were properly copyrighted in the US and the UK, which affected Jacobi's ability to make further re-proof's without permission from Brewer.
