Description: Richard A. Loederer 1894 - 1981 Voodoo Fire Haitian Inspired Aluminum Art. Richard A. Loederer was an Austrian (active in USA) artist who was born in 1894. Much of his unique art involves Haiti and exotic voodoo women. This is a solid aluminum block art carving. Heavy 3 pounds 10 ounces measuring 7" x 5.3" x 1". Aluminum was once more valuable than gold. Napoléon III's most important guests were given aluminum cutlery, while those less worthy dined with mere silver; fashionable and wealthy women wore jewelry crafted of aluminum. Once aluminum was discovered and isolated by scientists in the mid-1800's, it was still exceedingly rare. In the late 1880's they were producing almost 50 pounds of aluminum per day. Twenty years later, it was shipping out 88,000 pounds per day. The price of aluminum dropped from $4.86 per pound in 1888 to 78 cents per pound in 1893 (about $161.00 in todays dollars). A few years later it was down to 25 cents per pound. I do not know when this item was produced but it was inspired by the Voodoo Fire book that came out in the 1930's. Aluminum items were very popular in the 1920's and the 1930's. I acquired this in the 1980's at a garage estate sale. There were many high end items in the sale including art and rare books. I can not be certain if this item was made by Loederer as implied by the seller but it is obvious it was inspired by him. The book Voodoo Fire 1935 was with this item and I sold it many years ago. Rare item, I have watched on ebay and other sites many times over the years and have never seen another one like it.
