Intaglio printmaking on lucite was crafted by Richard Deshaies in the mid 1960's. Unlike etching or engraving upon traditional materials, such as copper, etching on lucite permits the artist to explore strong textural (almost embossed) forms and surfaces. "California Coast" is both a large and impressive example of this medium. This original impression is printed upon fine, archival paper and with full margins as published by Ferdinand Roten and publisher's 'FR' blindstamp in the lower left margin. It is signed, titled and numbered by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. "California Coast" is a fine, original example of the landscape art created by the American artist Richard Volpe. This artist was well known for his pencil sketches; his water-colors, and block-prints. He died December 11, 1985 from AIDS. Most of his work was done with one original and a number of prints/lithographs. Most of his work was sold prior to his death, to pay for the mounting hospital bills.
