Description: Black and white photo (9 3/4" by 8", 16" by 13 3/4" framed) of Rick "Ricky" Nelson, circa late 1950's, autographed at right and inscribed "To Jill". The signature and inscription are bold and nicely placed at right center. Nelson officially changed his name to "Rick" in 1961, so this might have been signed after that. The framing seems to be circa late 1960's or 1970's. Nelson was born in Teaneck, New Jersey. By his teens he had already attained fame and fortune, appearing in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and, in 1959, playing with John Wayne and Dean Martin in "Rio Bravo". He appeared on television and was a familiar face in the music and Hollywood scene until about the early 1970's, when his musical style was overshadowed by the Beatles and the changes they brought. He is considered a pioneer of country music and the "California sound" (artists like Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and the Eagles). Famously, tragically, Nelson died on New Years Eve, December 31, 1985 in the crash of a DC-3 airliner in Texas. He had been flying to an an appearance Dallas from a stint in Alabama. In 1987 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The photo is in generally good condition though the close observer will note some creases at left center from the ear to the edge; in the shoulder at right; and at upper right. A casual observer would barely notice these flaws.
