Louis Martyn Publication: Abingdon, 1990 Edition: First Edition Description: Hardcover. J. Louis Martyn's extensively annotated personal copy of his own Festschrift. Martyn did not write his name in the book, but the handwriting is his, and we personally trace the provenance of this copy to the acquisition of Martyn's library by Jon Stock of Windows Booksellers. [10] 11-400pp. A compendium of Pauline and Johannine studies by 26 of the some of the greatest Biblical Scholars of the 20th century, including Raymond Brown, Oscar Cullmann, E. P. Sanders, Walter Wink, and Wayne Meeks to name a few. Fortna and Gaventa locate Martyn's intense belovedness among his students and colleagues in his unique gift of conversation: 'From the imaginative conversations that enliven *History and Theology* and so forcefully reveal the Johannine church, from your more recent conversations with Paul, we have learned both to value and to cultivate the art of conversation. Your many colleagues and students have repeatedly identified their conversations with you as occasions marked by insight, honesty, and grace. This volume then, seeks to continue those conversations.' Martyn was born in Dallas, Texas and raised a Southern Baptist. He studied under Paul Minear at Andover Newton before completing his PhD at Yale under Paul Schubert and taking a Fulbright Fellowship to Gottingen to work with Joachim Jeremias and Ernst Kasemann. His approach to the text was characterize by an intense rigor and attention matched with a creativity rarely seen among Biblical scholars. His work culminated with the famed Anchor Bible Commentary on Galatians, 'one of the greatest commentaries of the twentieth century' which transformed the field of Pauline studies with his depiction of the apocalyptic character of Paul's teaching.
