A senior general in the Byzantine army, Leo V rose to power under Nikephoros I and Michael I. As emperor, Leo outlasted the dreaded Krum of Bulgaria and concluded a 30 year peace with the Bulgars. The remainder of Leo's reign was marked by religious controversy --- he was a big fan of iconoclasm --- and he was ultimately assassinated in the Hagia Sophia on Christmas Day in 820 CE.
