Description: While this book wasn’t written to capture Roman Catholicism as it was in 1950, it achieves that purpose very well. Except for a short 1964 appendix, this Harper Torchbooks edition that I review replicates the 1950 British edition. That appendix mainly concerns the accomplishments of Pope John XXIII, as the author understood them. Mentioned in passing: “The vigorous debate between those who were content to aim at a re-statement of the Church’s teaching in traditional forms and those who saw clearly that if the Church was to serve mankind, she must be prepared to speak a language that contemporary man could understand” (p. 142) that constituted the early years of the Second Vatican Council. (That static Church vs. dynamic Church debate still bubbles away today, at times vigorously.)This book is part of a large collection from the estate of an avid collector. This book has been carefully stored.
