Originally founded as a Phoenician trading colony in 940 BCE (roughly 100 years before Carthage), Carteia would become a strategic maritime city during the Punic Wars. In the aftermath of the Second Punic War, Carteia was captured by the Romans and was granted colonia status in 170 BCE. The city prospered under Roman rule for 600 years until it was sacked by the Vandals as they completed their roundabout migration from modern Poland to the Rhine frontier, through Roman Gaul, into Hispania, across the Straight of Gibraltar, and across the Mediterranean littoral to modern Tunisia. Comes with a (very) old handwritten attribution slip from a previous owner. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
