The octagonal vessel is a component object of the Pietroasa Treasure, which is dated to the 4th century CE. and was discovered in 1837 in Buzău county, Pietroasele commune, Istrița Hill, by two stonemasons Ion Lemnaru and Stan Avram. From the category of decorative objects in the Pietroasa Treasury, the polygonal vessels encrusted with colored stones are remarkable. The stones had different colors, were thin to flat and occupied most of the side walls of the vessels. The concern that the artists who made them gave, is the element of novelty that these objects bring. Similar to them is the ellipsoidal collar and all four fibulae that remain from the hoard. The octagonal and the dodecagonal vessel have analogies with the vessels used in the Roman era. Having wide horizontal laths, so that they make an extension of the lip of the vessels, they are known to historians from the 1st century CE. They evolved in form and design from those found in the Hildensheim and Broscoreale hoards (1st century CE) to those discovered at Ostroviany in Slovakia (2nd century CE).
